Carlos Burmeister was one of the most influential volunteers in the modern history of the Huntsville Soccer Club, and the annual Carlos Burmeister Memorial Tournament exists to honour both his love of soccer and his commitment to young players in the community.
Carlos passed away in January 2021 after a battle with cancer. Outside of his professional career, he was known throughout Huntsville as a dedicated community volunteer whose passions were his family, soccer, and local sports. He served for many years as a coach, mentor, and organizer within the Huntsville Soccer Club and was particularly involved in developing REP players. His calm leadership style, knowledge of the game, and genuine care for youth made him a respected role model for players and parents alike.
His impact extended beyond coaching. Friends and family described him as a driving force within the club who found tremendous joy in helping young athletes improve and gain confidence through soccer. He worked with both boys' and girls' teams and was known for promoting sportsmanship, inclusion, and a love of the game.
One of Carlos' most memorable beliefs was that "every kid should have their own soccer ball." Following his passing, family and friends created the Team Carlos Foundation to support underprivileged children by providing soccer balls to young players in need. The Huntsville Soccer Club partnered in that effort and chose to name an annual tournament in his honour.
The memorial tournament is more than just a soccer event. Funds raised support the Team Carlos Foundation's mission of providing soccer balls to disadvantaged children in Canada and internationally, helping continue the charitable work inspired by Carlos' vision.
In short, Carlos is remembered not because of trophies or championships, but because of the lasting effect he had on young players, families, and the soccer culture in Huntsville. His legacy is one of volunteerism, mentorship, community spirit, and a belief that every child should have the opportunity to enjoy the game he loved.
